Can dental implants be done when bone levels are too less?
This is a story of one of my patient named Padma, who lost all her teeth at the age of 38, due to a condition called aggressive periodontitis. Where most of the teeth are lost due to loss of bone support around the teeth. This meant that she was without teeth at such a young age and she has low bone levels now. Living with removable dentures at such a young age and continuing to do so all her life would be a nightmare for anyone. I remember her saying " I sometimes even wanted to end my life". That is the kind of emotional trauma she was going through.
We ran a few diagnostic scans for her and did 3 D planning for implants, things were not very favourable, but we decided to go ahead with the best available option (straumann BLX implants) along with a grafting procedure to increase bone support. A guided surgery was planned with bone supported surgical guides for both maxillary and mandibular arches and bicortical anchorage in maxillary (nasal floor); along with immediate loading. It took 7 hours to finish everything but the end result was worth all of it, a million dollar smile on her face when she looked into the mirror with her new set of fixed teeth. We couldn't have asked for more.
There is always a way out. You only need to trust the process and be positive. There are so many advancements today. Zygomatic Implants, Pterygoid Implants, are still options available when bone levels are less for regular rootform Implants. Also there are other options available in case implants are really not a possibility. So don't be disheartened. Just get the right advice for you and trust the dentist.
